Choose JPG PNG or WebP for an upload
Match transparency, file size and destination support to the image format you export.

Use JPG for photographs when transparency is unnecessary, PNG when transparency or sharp graphic edges matter, and WebP when the receiving site accepts it. Converting a format does not recover detail missing from the original.

Transparency changes the decision
JPG cannot store transparent pixels. This site fills them with white during JPEG export. PNG supports transparency, and supported WebP exports can preserve it too. Check the preview on a contrasting background if transparency matters to a logo or signature.
Quality and dimensions are separate settings
A JPEG or WebP quality setting affects lossy encoding, while resizing changes the number of pixels. PNG encoding does not use the browser quality slider in the same way. When an upload needs fewer bytes, choosing appropriate dimensions can matter more than repeatedly converting formats.
Check the file after conversion
The destination may reject a format even when your browser can display it. Confirm the required extension, dimensions and byte limit. Browser canvas exports can discard original metadata and animation. Keep a separate original if you need those features, and never expect enlarging a small source to restore genuine detail.
